James Barnhill

Born in Asheville, North Carolina in 1955, sculptor James Barnhill is known for his life studies. Barnhill received his masters of Fine Arts degree in sculpture from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, studying under the late Peter Agostini. Working from the live model, Barnhill sculpts figures of arresting form and beauty. Sculpting in the round and in relief; his works range in size from intimate indoor pieces to monumental outdoor pieces. His works are represented in private and corporate collections. He has executed works for liturgical, garden, pool and fountain settings as well as being commissioned for portrait busts. More than a mere copy of a human body, Barnhill’s work seeks to marry the abstract principles of design and composition in the natural form of the figure. James Barnhill also teaches sculpting and is an associate professor in the art department at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.

Awards include winning the prestigious James Wilbur Johnston Figurative Sculpture Competition in 1987 at the Corcoran in Washington, DC. He also won third place in the figurative sculpture competition held at the New York Academy of Art and was awarded first place in the competition at the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Lyme, Connecticut.
